Chapter Six
“I don’t understand what’s going on,” Oscar said as he dressed. “What’s so important that you have to rush out of here at two in the morning?”
Not once since Bruno had gone down the wrong path had he ever admitted he had a problem. Not once. Now he’d called and asked Hale to get him out of that life. There was no way he was leaving his brother out there. He needed to drop Oscar off and then go pick up Bruno before Chino or one of his men found him.
“My brother needs me.”
“Then I’m coming with you,” Oscar said. He tied his shoes and looked at Hale as if ready to roll out.
“You can’t,” Hale said. “It’s too dangerous.”
“Like that’s gonna convince me to stay behind.” There was stubbornness in the man’s emerald-green eyes. “You just claimed me and I’m supposed to run on home while you head right into danger?” He huffed. “I don’t think so. I’m going.”
Hale looked around for his keys. Where in the hell had he put them? His evening with Oscar seemed like another lifetime. Panic and determination had set in, and he was ready to get out of there. Where were those damn keys?
“Did you hear me?” Oscar said.
“You’re going home.”
“You can’t stop me from following you,” Oscar argued. “I’m sorry, but I won’t sit on my thumb while you head into danger.” He scratched at his dark brown hair. “How exactly will you be risking your life?”
Hale didn’t have time for this. He wasn’t about to stand there and argue with the guy. He spotted his keys by the television. Hale snagged them and headed for the door, Oscar right behind him.
“My brother got involved with some very nasty men,” Hale explained. “I have to find him before they do. If I get pinned down in a gunfight with them, I refuse to have you caught up in that shit.”
Hale grabbed his cell phone and dialed. “Matthew, I need you to come get Oscar.”
“Don’t you dare,” Oscar said. He looked hurt that Hale would push him away, but he’d rather have his mate mad at him than killed.
“What the hell is going on?” Matthew asked.
“I gotta take care of some dangerous business, and my mate refuses to go home.”
“Mate?” Matthew sounded stunned. “Oscar?”
“Yeah.”
Oscar went for the door, but Hale jumped in the way, slamming his hand against the wood. He’d be damned if he allowed his mate to walk out so late at night. He jerked his leg to the side when Oscar tried to kick him. And here he’d thought the human timid. Oscar looked as if he wanted to punch him.
“When the hell did you find out that Oscar was your mate?” Matthew asked.
“Two nights ago,” Hale said. “Can you come get him?”
“What kind of shit did you get him into?” Matthew sounded downright pissed.
“None. That’s why I need you to come get him.”
“Yeah, okay,” Matthew said. “But I’m warning you now. He has an entire clan of bears that would kill for him, friends as well.
